the devil's inspiration
(a Shakespearean sonnet)
IT'S BY GOD'S CHOICE THAT SATAN RULES THE EARTH.
If not, then artists would have aught to do.
No ugly inspirations to give birth
to our poetic efforts to imbue . . .

. . .the touch of beauty where the Devil's messed
around with truth and justice 'in his way'
with help from people you'd have never guessed,
which leaves us thinking: 'Well, we're still OK.'

He uglifies the world 'within our rules'
the rule of law, our highest reasoning.
( Who do you think designed our public schools?)
But still, 'twas God himself made Satan king.

And so, by hell, George Dubya's president.
And thus inspired, God's artists pay their rent.
