backyard expatriate
(a Shakespearean sonnet)
TIME MAGAZINE NAMED BUSH MAN OF THE YEAR.
I cancelled my subscription right away
and turned my dark thoughts towards art and Shakespeare
with hopes to soothe my soul of its dismay.

Our nation's QUALITY is now beneath
the threshold that my conscience can endure.
For Christmas I have purchased a black wreath
to place upon the tomb of what was pure:

my heart's naive belief that we could not
 	defame our principles sufficiently
that from the book of citizens I'd blot
my name -- erase my nationality.

A man in exile in his own backyard . . .
who's sent his first subscription-canc'lling card.
