the republic of experts
and the valuation of expertise
(a Shakespearean sonnet)

SUPPOSE YOU WANT TO HIRE SOME EXPERTISE . . .
What do you need to know to hire your team?
What college did they go to? What degrees?
Would Harvard MBAs make good ice cream?

Suppose you need a surgeon's hands to cut
a very graceful line within your skull?
Well, here's a Harvard doc . . . But you say: 'But,
however well degreed, is his knife dull?

How many of his patients spoke again?
How many left his table for a box.
'Twas one in twenty? Or nine out of ten?'
No, di'monds are not weighed like tons of rocks.

HOW IS AN EXPERT VALUED? . . . QUALITY.
(That's one thing I imply by 'POETRY.')
