journalists in July
(a Shakespearean sonnet)

AND NOW THAT WE have counted all the votes
('we' being those assigned to seek the facts:
hard evidence -- not notions from our notes),
we see it all clear now and can relax.

It's been a waste of time: We won't report
that Al Gore would have won if justice rules.
We won't write that we cannot trust the Court.
(We 'sure' won't print that journalists are fools.)

We must not say 'The President's a thug
who had his henchmen kill democracy
and cover up the bloodstains with a rug.'
(That's harsh, but I try hard for acc'racy.)

We'll get no byline, so let's chug our beers.
And hide our heads so no one sees our tears.
