BOKE index

/ Personal Postmodern Library

"Now, whenever someone says
that we live in a rhetorical world
someone else will immediately say
what Kloppenberg says in a
snippy little note directed at me:
this means 'Anything goes.'
No, what it means is that
anything that can be made to go
goes..." (Stanley Fish, The
Trouble With Principles, p 307)
NOTE: This is the only "useful" fragment Dr.
Fish has ever written. ;) So, keep this example
in mind when you see a title below. Sometimes
only a title or a fragment is worth reading.

Once upon a time ... there were really good bookstores ... which were miraculously stocked ... with wonderfully strange books ... that called out to BOKE ... who wishes he had dated each acquisition ... so he could list the books in that order ... rather than alphabetacally ... like the names of the fallen on the black wall of the Vietnam War Memorial ... sort of ... Of course, none of the bookstores .... had a section labeled "Rhetoric" ... which meant it took a long time ... for BOKE to figure out ... that was what he was looking for ... so he could ... see ...

TALE OF A BOOKSTORE (ONE): Once upon a time on a small mountain ... there was a small college bookstore ... filled with books chosen with care ... by some wise minds ... and BOKE found many treasures there ... BUT THEN, someone computerized the inventory ... and only stocked books ... that were popular ... and soon there were no longer any interesting books.

TALE OF A BOOKSTORE (TWO): Once upon a time by the Pacific Ocean ... there was a bookstore beside a movie theater ... and across the street from another movie theater ... which is a great place to look for books while waiting to see a movie :) ... anyway ... This bookstore was so good ... that a new college in Mexico ... sent a team of people ... to stock their new library ... from books on the shelf there ... where BOKE found many of the best books below. (CODA: Unfortunately, the wonderful person ... who had been giving the bookstore a good deal on the rent, became somewhat less altruistic ... and so the bookstore beside two movie theaters ... had to move ... one street over ... and it was never quite the same again... So be really careful about moving a good bookstore.)

[FATEFUL?] BOOK/BOKE COINCIDENCE: In Shakepespeare's age, a word for "book" was "boke."

[CONCLUDING] BOOKS NOTE: Around the turn of the twenty-first century, BOKE had "enough" books. After that, less reading, more writing ... sonnets... :)

"To hear significance is to translate."
"We endure, we endure creatively due to
our imperative ability to say 'No' to reality, to build fictions of alterity, of dreamt or willed or awaited 'otherness' for our consciousness to inhabit."
"Above all, it addresses itself, in hope of response, to poets. Which is to say to anyone who makes the language live and who knows that the affair at Babel was both a disaster and — this being the etymology of the word 'disaster' — a rain of stars upon man."

Death of Tragedy (The) | George Steiner [is Extraordinary Fellow of Churchill College, Cambridge, and Professor of English and Comparative Literature, University of Geneva] | 1960/1981 Oxford University Press | [literature]

"All the plays we have considered so far are written in verse. ... I say verse and not poetry ...; verse is a technical form.

In literature, verse precedes prose. Literature is a setting apart of language from the requirements of immediate utility and communication. It raises discourse above common speech for purposes of invocation, adornment, or remembrance. ... By not being prose, by having metre or rhyme or a pattern of formal recurrence, language imposes on the mind a sense of special occasion and preserves its shape in the memory. It becomes verse. ...

Attic drama represents a convergence of speech, music, and dance. In all three, rhythm is the vital centre, and when language is in a state of rhythm (words in th econdition of ordered motion), it is verse. ... Greek tragedy is sung, danced, and declaimed. Prose has no place in it.

... The matter of tragic legend ... cannot be held liable to prosaic inquisition. As Robert Graves says, the imagination has extra-territorial rights, and these are guarded by poetry.

... [W]e may say that verse is the pure mathematics of langage. It is more exact than prose, more self-contained, and more capable of constructing theoretic forms independent of material basis.

Prose ... is the garb of the mind doing its daily job of work.
